Traditions and Events in Pärnu Little Freeschool

The 2nd September Outing

The 2nd September Outing is Pärnu Little Freeschool`s tradition. We do it every year with the whole school. Parents may also accompany the students. Usually we go to Jõulumäe (a sport centre 15 km from Pärnu) for a day.

In 2006 we went to Matsalu (in West of Estonia) for two days. We went to a nature expedition, did some sports and made a fire.

Autumn Sports Day

Sports day is the whole school´s health-supporting activity where the students and their families gather to breath fresh air and compete or just go walking in the forest.

Autumn Fair

In September there is an Autumn Fair.

Each class chooses what they want to sell

at the fair to earn money for the whole class.

In 2006 there were:

I class – Wonderland

II class – vegetable and fruit sale

III-IV classes – games

V class – sale of ice cream, flowers etc

VI class – sushi café

VII class – pastry café

VIII class – lottery

IX class – youth club

Health Week in Pärnu Little Freeschool

In 2006 the health week´s subject was “Water”.

On Monday 5th and 7-9 graders visited our town´s water reservoir. After that they had a quiz.

On Tuesday we read about, did experiments with, sang about, drew pictures and played games: all about water.

On Wednesday we had a little competition named “A Healthy Sandwich”.

At Thursday night students from older classes organized Playback Show where every class had to prepare a commercial clip about healthy lifestyle.

Party for Fathers and Grandfathers

In November we organize a concert for fathers and grandfathers. There is usually a coffee table and a guest-speaker (for instance in 2006 a psychologist Rein Luug had a conversation with fathers and grandfathers). In previous years we have had:

* Sport competitions between children and fathers.

* Military exercises for fathers.

* Fathers´ cooking courses etc.

Week of Math & Science

• A Week of Math & Science traditionally takes place in January.

• On Monday we have Math Olympics where the smartest students from older classes show their knowledge.

• On Tuesday Math Quiz takes place with 1-4 graders and 4-9 graders.

• On Wednesday we have Science Olympics where the smartest students in science show their knowledge.

• On Thursday we have Inventions Congress where students show the work they have done and on Friday the best ones are given an award.

Friends´ Week in February

• At the beginning of the week we have a “Red Day”-all students have to wear red.

• On Tuesday we have a “Night Clothes´ Day”. Students and teachers have to wear night clothes and bring pillows, Teddy bears, and all other bedtime things with them.

• Wednesday is a real “Friends´ Day”. All students who want can dress alike with their friend. The best pair wins an award. There is also a friend´s mailbox where you can send a letter to a friend.

• During the school day we have a café and lottery.

• On Thursday everybody is asked to come to school in striped, spotted or checked clothes.

The Estonian Independence Day-24th February

The Estonian Republic Independence Day celebration at our school has a concert like in other schools all around Estonia.

At the ceremony the school director thanks all the good workers and a history teacher delivers a speech about the first years of Estonian independence.

We have a banquet table with different kinds of food for all our school workers and students.

The banquet table is usually made by the older girls.

Granny´s and Grandpa´s party

Granny´s and grandpa´s party takes place at the end of February.

Students perform and show their parents and grandparents what they do at school. At the end of the party parents and grandparents can go to students´ classrooms and look the children´s handicrafts, poetry and drawings.

School Musicals

Our school has a tradition to do a spring celebration on the 1st of May which for the last three years has been a school musical. In our school musicals everybody can take part. All the costumes are made in handicraft classes and songs and dances are learned in music and dance classes. We usually perform it twice-1 concert is for our parents and another for citizens of Pärnu.
